10th Islamic Countries Conference on Statistical Sciences


Dr. Muhammad Rashid Salaria, Professor, SZABIST Islamabad has attended the Tenth Islamic Countries Conference on Statistical Sciences (ICCS-X), held in Cairo, Egypt on December 20-23, 2009.This Conference was organized by the American University in Cairo in collaboration with the Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) and the Egyptian Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center. The theme of the Conference was: Statistics for Development and Good Governance.

Three hundred (300) delegates, consisting of academicians, professionals, researchers and practitioners in statistical sciences, from 32 countries, representing 130 organizations (including SZABIST, Pakistan) participated in the Conference. Several Egyptian universities and government agencies including Al-Azhar university, Ain Shams university and Cairo university were also represented in the Conference.

There were four keynote speakers, and these include: Prof. Jef Teugels, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium (and the current President of International Statistical Institute, Hague, Netherlands); Prof. Kaye E. Basford, University of Queensland, Australia; Prof. Jim Berger, Duke University, USA and Prof. Edward J. Wegman, George Mason University, USA. The speeches were delivered on emerging statistical issues encountered by the present day global society.

In addition, three Discussion Panels, Public Opinion Polling and Good Governance, Measuring the Unmeasurable: Corruption; and Indicators and Politics were devoted entirely to the theme of the Conference. More than 190 presentations were made in the Conference which were arranged in well planned 9 Invited Sessions and 20 Contributed Sessions. Each presentation was followed by a crucial question-answer session.

Dr. Salaria's paper entitled 'Employees Intentions regarding Turnover in Banking Sector of Pakistan' was presented on the second day of the Conference. The proceedings of the Conference will be published in February / March, 2010.
