SZABIST Students Proactive to Save Lives of Thalassemia Patients
Encourage by the success of a recent blood donation project students of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) Islamabad campus now intend to establish a full fledge permanent camp at its Islamabad campus to save the lives of these patients who are in urgent need of blood.
Students are going to undertake this new initiative in collaboration with Burhani Bank and Armed Force Institute of Transfusion (AFIT) Pakistan .Under this proposed program students will carry out a drive across Islamabad aimed at apprising people of the importance of blood donation and to motivate them towards this trend in order to save the precious lives that could probably be lost due to non-availability of blood.
In this regard students will go door to door to find blood donors, display banners at different points in the city as well as within their campus attracting potential blood donors.
Pertinent to mention that just recently students of SZABIST established a two-day camp at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad in collaboration with Burhani Blood Camp, AFIT Pakistan and Thalassemia Centre and collected 177 bags of blood for thalassemia patients.
This initiative saved lives of 513 patients of Thalassemia, a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. A person suffering from thalassemia cannot survive unless he gets blood transfusion after every 15/20 days.
There were no revenues/profits generated out of this exercise but brought about the incomparable fruit of saving patients from death.
The blood donation campaign is part of SZABIST commitment to promote Academia-Community close partnership that envisages betterment and welfare of a common Pakistani. This vision is in line with the commitments made at the Regional Policy Dialogue on Universities and their Communities held in Dhaka last year. The two-day dialogue held on December 7 and 8, 2011 brought 30-40 senior delegates from South Asian universities, development, community, and public and private sector organisations. It was aimed at strengthening strategic collaboration at policy and institutional level in the South Asia region and beyond with a common objective of the well-being of community.
Syed Asad Hussain, Director SZABIST represented Pakistan at this event and shared his thoughts and suggestions with delegates to forward the goal of universities serving communities in a better ways.
